- Hailing from the shores of Western Michigan, Cathy Sero has lived within walking distance of a pond, lake or stream since birth. She exhibited a knack for fishing prior to walking. Once she began, she never stopped. She has vivid childhood memories of practicing fly casting from the diving board of her backyard swimming pool. With a father and three uncles, all avid outdoorsmen and holding many tournament casting titles (one is in the American Casting Association's Hall of Fame); it was inevitable that she would fly fish.
Her first love is teaching and Cathy has consistently sought avenues to combine that with her other love of fly fishing. In the 1997 she was hired as the first woman instructor for the Orvis Company's Midwest Corporate Fly Fishing Schools. Soon after, on a dare from her father, she found herself participating in both regional and national casting tournaments. During that time she began to learn from such casting and fishing legends as Steve Rajeff, Dick Fujita, Joan Wulff, Jim Chapralis, Paul Melchior, and a list of other legends.
Awards aside, it is instructing and fishing for trout that are most important to Cathy. In 2000, she made a pact with a fellow guide that she would teach 1,000 women to fly fish - all through volunteering. She achieved that goal by the end of 2004 and continues to this day.
Cathy has instructed for Becoming an Outdoor Woman (WI, IN, IL, MI), Trout Unlimited in the Midwest states, numerous fly fishing clubs, and non profit organizations. She facilitates and advocates fly fishing retreats for cancer survivors, individuals with disabilites, as well as health centers, corporations, hospitals, universities and corporations.
Beyond her full-time work with a private euqity firm based in Chicago, Cathy focuses on coaching well-being and spirit renewal through the healing powers of fly fishing. She is the President of Reeling & Healing Midwest, a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization that champions fly fishing retreats for cancer survivors.
